SEA and easyJet: Terminal 2 of Milano Malpensa reopens on 31 May

Terminal 2 of Milano Malpensa officially becomes operative again from tomorrow, and will once again be the exclusive home of easyJet

Held this morning was the presentation by SEA - Società Esercizi Aeroportuali, the Group that manages the airport systems of Milano Malpensa and Linate, and easyJet – the number one company in Milan’s airports – of the restyling operation of Terminal 2 of Milano Malpensa, which officially reopens tomorrow, 31 May.

The presentation, which was held in the airside area of the terminal, featured speeches by: Attilio Fontana, President of the Lombardy Region; Giuseppe Sala, Mayor of Milan; Stefano Bellaria, Mayor of Somma Lombardo; Pierluigi Di Palma, President of ENAC; Lorenzo Lagorio, Country Manager of easyJet Italia, and Armando Brunini, CEO of SEA - Società Esercizi Aeroportuali.

Closed in June 2020 as a result of the pandemic and the resulting drop in air traffic, Terminal 2 of Milano Malpensa airport will now be operative once one more, in its role as the exclusive home of easyJet, with a new look that will further improve passengers’ travel experience, from the check-in and control stages through to boarding.

Specifically, the check-in area will have 21 self bag drop machines that will allow travellers to check their luggage into the hold independently. The security check area has been renovated throughout, with a new, more functional layout that offers passengers 9 new automated, latest-generation lines that will reduce checking and waiting times for travellers. In addition, the Fast Track lane will be equipped with a EDS-CB (Explosives Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage) machine, with CAT technology that will enable checks to be carried out without removing electronic devices and liquids from hand luggage, further improving the travel experience. Particular attention has been devoted to passenger comfort, including an increased retail offer, with a completely new 1500-square-metre duty free shop and an impressive range of food options featuring innovative formulas and a number of features seen for the first time in Italy.

As regards energy efficiency, work has been carried out on the people moving systems, with the installation of new and more efficient mobile walkways, escalators and lifts at different points of the airport. A number of areas, such as the arrivals corridor, have been renovated, with particular attention paid to improving thermal insulation and energy performance. The new latest-generation air conditioning system will allow for a 15% reduction in the energy used for air conditioning, and a reduction of approximately 8% in CO2 emissions.

On the day of the reopening alone, more than 20,000 easyJet passengers will be passing through Terminal 2, travelling to and from their favourite destinations in Italy and Europe. This busy, exciting inauguration will usher in a summer of great expectations for the orange airline, during which it expects to fly a total of almost 5 million passengers to more than 60 destinations, with a total of 23 aircraft based at the main easyJet hub in Continental Europe.

Lorenzo Lagorio, Country Manager of easyJet Italia, commented:
We are very proud to be celebrating our return to Terminal 2 of Milano Malpensa, together with the 25th anniversary of the first easyJet flight in Milan and in Italy. From May 1998 to the present, we’ve flown 90 million passengers to and from this airport, confirming the airline’s on-going commitment to Italy and to the Lombardy region in particular. This summer, we expect to have almost 5 million passengers passing through Terminal 2, essentially marking a return to pre-pandemic levels. With 23 aircraft based here, more than 60 destinations and a team of around 900 people, Milano Malpensa is easyJet’s main base in continental Europe, with an unprecedented offer in terms of seats available and destinations served, with a punctual, innovative and increasingly efficient service,  from tomorrow also thanks to a Terminal in line with our requirements and those of our customers”.

Quote Armando Brunini, CEO at SEA:
"The reopening of Malpensa Terminal 2 is a further confirmation of the passenger traffic full recovery and that the pandemic is officially over. We  celebrate this important day together with easyJet again operative from the terminal 2. The airport is now more comfortable, efficient and sustainable thanks to all our investments we made in order to improve the quality of passengers experience".
