Explore more than expected: Sirmione, the city on Lake Garda
2024-03-27
There is more beyond Milan: the discovery of a region full of emotions begins! This is the message that SEA Milan Airports launches with the "Explore more than expected" campaign.
There are countless wonderful places that can be visited just a few kilometers from the Lombard capital. Not only the Duomo of Milan therefore - the magnificent Gothic cathedral in the city center - the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the many other well-known attractions of the metropolitan area.
Among these is Sirmione, in the province of Brescia, which stands on Lake Garda.
Sirmione worships the sun all day long: the Lido delle Blonde sees the sunrise, Jamaica Beach feels the intensity of the midday light, and Bremen Beach sees the sun set just behind the hills. Time seems to have stood still since Dante visited: within the walls of Scaliger castle, in the solemnity of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore or San Pietro in Mavino, among the remains of Catullus' caves, so beloved of ‘La Divina’, the soprano Maria Callas.
The Scaligero castle in Sirmione is a fortress dating back to Scaliger Period and it is the only point of access to the historical centre of Sirmione. It is one of the most complete and best preserved castles in Italy, as well as a rare example of lake fortification. Entering the castle is mandatory (there is no other entrance) passing the drawbridge, the fortress is in fact lined on all sides by Lake Garda. The castle is bathed on all sides by the waters of Lake Garda, and on one of these sides the dock was made, shortly after the construction of the castle, which was once a place of refuge of the fleet of Verona. The walls and the three massive main towers are characterised by the dovetailed battlements that distinguish each Scaligeri construction.
The term “Grottos of Catullus” identifies a Roman villa built at the end of the first century B.C. and the first century A.D. The name “Grottos” dates back to 1400, when the ruins were visited by the first chroniclers and travellers, to whom they appeared in the form of cave-like grottos. The archaeological complex, studied from the beginning of the nineteenth century and excavated in stages, is today the most important testimony of the Roman period in the territory of Sirmione.
After a day of sun and culture, all that remains is to be pampered by the warm thermal waters that have made this location famous throughout the world!
